Shumard Oak
Quercus shumardii

One of the largest of the southern red oaks. It is a lowland tree and grows scattered with other hardwoods on moist well-drained soils along streams. It makes a handsome shade tree and will endure urban conditions and clay soil.

Unique Information: Named for Benjamin Franklin Shumard, state geologist of Texas.
Native Range: North Carolina to north Florida, west to central Texas, and north to eastern Kansas; Pennsylvania; to 2500 Ft.
Habitat: Moist well-drained soils including flood plains along streams, also on dry ridges and limestone hills.
Uses: Shumard oak is marketed with other red oak lumber for flooring, furniture, interior trim, and cabinetry.
